-------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 00:06:38 EDT There is no retaliation too extreme. In fact, anything short of MASS DESTRUCTION of any faction, any group, any city and any country who has any alliance with Bin Laden is failure, and an encouragement for future terror. Call me what you will, or ignore me, whatever you do or think is fine. But I know what I feel is right. And I feel the only true justice is a massive and extreme retaliation. A sweeping wave of retribution, harsh enough to end and endanger the existence of the guilty and those related. You know what I mean. We made the mistake of passivity with Iraq, and it has brought us this. We taunted instead of eliminate the enemy. Now we must end the game. FerociousMonk -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 00:33:55 EDT Hey Guys...haven't been around today...it just felt like a day to be with family...thanks fo being around here...hope people are holding up OK...talk soon, folks... RAYNGER -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 05:18:52 EDT Ferocious - Nuke'm and to hell with the collateral damage, huh? Would that make us any different? The killing of innocents is not condoned by motives, righteous or otherwise. I want a pound of flesh just like most other Wallcrawlers, but I draw the line when it comes to including women and children. And yes, I have acquaintences who worked at WTC. My son was in transit when it occured (thank God). But I think I would feel the same way, either way. I believe that countries that harbor criminals should be excluded from the brotherhood (sisterhood?)of nations. I share you pain. OT -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 07:21:22 EDT IGGY, thank you, I feel a little better knowing everyone is accounted for now. York18 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 08:09:51 EDT If the goal of the terrorists was to destroy America as bin Laden has stated on numerous occasions he has failed miserably and probably did more to hurt his cause then he could have imagined. US/European relations were becoming very strained due to USs backing out of the Kiyoto agreements and there was much tension during anti-globalization protests... If bin Laden's goal was to once again re-unite the US and Europe into a strong, cohesive bond that they haven't shared since the end of WW2 then he succeded. If his goal was to unite the people of the US and to raise their political conciousness and step up the war against terrorism then he succeded. If his goal was to bring America to it's knees and to tremble with fear then he failed miserably. If his goal was to reinstate NYers faith in their Police Department which was at an all time low then he succeded. All bin Laden proved was that the US is the greatest nation on the planet. Being concerned and afraid for your fellow Americans, as well as for your own safety is a natural reaction but that should not be mistaken as fear as a nation. NY will rebuild itself and not miss a beat. We will once again live safely. Bin Laden, however, is a dead man. Everyone who helps him and is associated with him will also be dead. They are the ones who will live in fear, not us. Is America stronger because of this? - I say yes. Just last week the Red Cross was saying that blood supplies in the US were dangerously low... I doubt we will have that problem for some time to come. Watching NYers cheering on rescue workers yesterday was a welcome sight. It is also a relief seing so many people cheering rescue workers in cotrast to the few that were dancing in the streets celebrating the deaths of innocent people. It gives one some hope in these difficult times. Living overseas I constantly hear from others that there is no such thing as an American... you don't have you're own identity... etc. Well, it is true that most Americans don't have Sioux or Blackfoot ancestors (or the many other native American tribes) but make no mistake... there are Americans and they love their country much more than anyone could imagine. Sorry for the long rant but it helps being able to communicate with fellow Americans in these trying times! Long live America! May you all be safe and let's find these bastards and show them just how much we value our freedom and our way of life! MikeLviv -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 08:42:22 EDT (non-hockey) I thought this was so well written that I'd share it... Written by Leonard Pitts of the Miami Herald. We'll go forward from this moment [Wednesday, September 12, 2001] It's my job to have something to say. They pay me to provide words that help make sense of that which troubles the American soul. But in this moment of airless shock when hot tears sting disbelieving eyes, the only thing I can find to say, the only words that seem to fit, must be addressed to the unknown author of this suffering. You monster. You beast. You unspeakable bastard. What lesson did you hope to teach us by your coward's attack on our World Trade Center, our Pentagon, us? What was it you hoped we would learn? Whatever it was, please know that you failed. Did you want us to respect your cause? You just damned your cause. Did you want to make us fear? You just steeled our resolve. Did you want to tear us apart? You just brought us together. Let me tell you about my people. We are a vast and quarrelsome family, a family rent by racial, social, political and class division, but a family nonetheless. We're frivolous, yes, capable of expending tremendous emotional energy on pop cultural minutiae -- a singer's revealing dress, a ball team's misfortune, a cartoon mouse. We're wealthy, too, spoiled by the ready availability of trinkets and material goods, and maybe because of that, we walk through life with a certain sense of blithe entitlement. We are fundamentally decent, though -- peace-loving and compassionate. We struggle to know the right thing and to do it. And we are, the overwhelming majority of us, people of faith, believers in a just and loving God. Some people -- you, perhaps -- think that any or all of this makes us weak. You're mistaken. We are not weak. Indeed, we are strong in ways that cannot be measured by arsenals. Yes, we're in pain now. We are in mourning and we are in shock. We're still grappling with the unreality of the awful thing you did, still working to make ourselves understand that this isn't a special effect from some Hollywood blockbuster, isn't the plot development from a Tom Clancy novel. Both in terms of the awful scope of their ambition and the probable final death toll, your attacks are likely to go down as the worst acts of terrorism in the history of the United States and, probably, the history of the world. You've bloodied us as we have never been bloodied before. But there's a gulf of difference between making us bloody and making us fall. This is the lesson Japan was taught to its bitter sorrow the last time anyone hit us this hard, the last time anyone brought us such abrupt and monumental pain. When roused, we are righteous in our outrage, terrible in our force. When provoked by this level of barbarism, we will bear any suffering, pay any cost, go to any length, in the pursuit of justice. I tell you this without fear of contradiction. I know my people, as you, I think, do not. What I know reassures me. It also causes me to tremble with dread of the future. In the days to come, there will be recrimination and accusation, fingers pointing to determine whose failure allowed this to happen and what can be done to prevent it from happening again. There will be heightened security, misguided talk of revoking basic freedoms. We'll go forward from this moment sobered, chastened, sad. But determined, too. Unimaginably determined. You see, the steel in us is not always readily apparent. That aspect of our character is seldom understood by people who don't know us well. On this day, the family's bickering is put on hold. As Americans we will weep, as Americans we will mourn, and as Americans, we will rise in defense of all that we cherish. So I ask again: What was it you hoped to teach us? It occurs to me that maybe you just wanted us to know the depths of your hatred. If that's the case, consider the message received. And take this message in exchange: You don't know my people. You don't know what we're capable of. You don't know what you just started. But you're about to learn. BADBOY409 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 09:33:18 EDT MIKE: Your friend is certainly correct. It backs up what several of my friends who were stationed over there as peacekeepers have told me. As in any war, both sides have plenty of blood on their hands, although admittedly my sympathies lie more with the Serbians. It just makes no sense to me why we came down so lopsidedly on the side of the KLA, a known narco-terrorist organization with ties to Osama Bin Laden and his ilk, effectively setting up an Islamic narco-terrorist state right in the heart of Europe. And as I said yesterday, this campaign was supported by both political parties, and most vociferously by the aforementioned Republican John McCain, so again, any inference that my criticism of this operation is somehow politically "partisan" is obviously not accurate, and something I would never do at a time like this. If I spend the rest of my life hiding from this garbage, not trusting anything and anyone, not being able to go to my national tresures because I'm afraid , then they have achieved victory. As I stated in my post, I know my views are not universally shared (or shown). But this is what it's come to. WE are now the collateral damage. Therefore, it is war. Collateral damage is part of war. A true victory, in any logical objective at this point, is DECIMATION of the enemy, the mother of the enemy, and the future enemies. It sends no strong message and metes no significant justice to sit and snipe away at their footsoldiers. So yes. To Hell with THEIR collateral damage, when WE are now collateral damage. Like it or not, that's my view. As I look at the tv now, apparently roughly 10 people have now been arrested from NY area airports with false IDs, claiming they are pilots. This is getting even worse. But we will prevail. GOD BLESS AMERICA! TheFEZ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 021:16:56 EDT Hi fellow Wallsters, I just found some time to see what was happening on the wall and decided to share my story and thoughts with all of you. This week, which was to be a joyous time for my family, and me has been just hell. I am getting married on Saturday and was hoping to share a great time celebrating with friends and family. This attack on our civilization and freedom has destroyed so many lives and has hit too close to home. I work (15 years) for one of the large brokerage houses located in the World Financial Center across from the WTC. I have many friends who are missing! Waiting knowing that friends and family of friends are missing is unbelievably devastating. My fiances girlfriend?s brother in law called his wife from the 101st floor to tell her he wasn't coming home and that he loved her and their 3 year old child. No one has heard from him since. Devastating! I was a project manager responsible for the construction of the WFC South Tower (Not the Trade Tower), seeing the devastation this has done to my building has crushed me. My fiance who I almost lost in this disaster works in the WFC, she just got off the bus with her sister and was beginning to cross the promenade when she heard what she thought was an air show, she looked up and saw the first plane crash into the first building, in horror she watched as innocent people were falling out of the gaping hole in the building to their deaths. Shards of glass and debris beginning to rain down on them they ran into a store for safety. After windows and glass stopped breaking she walked outside to see if a cop was around, then the second plane hit. She grabbed her sister and ran to then across the Brooklyn Bridge to safety. Thank God! I was going to a business meeting in NJ and was in the car with a fellow employee when we heard the news. I can't tell you the feelings I had listening as they told of the towers collapsing. I tried in vain to reach anyone, and couldn't. About 1/2 hour past and I was on my way home when my cell rang and it was my fiance, she called from the Brooklyn Bridge hysterical as the first tower collapsed. So surreal. NY is a large city but it's very small for those who live and grew up here, you meet hundreds of new people each year and have many friends, this was our home, we walked through this buildings, shopped, ate our lunch in the promenade, shared laughs with friends. My office moved me to Jersey City last February, but I take the ferry just about every day to the WFC & WTC because my associates are there, my office window is right in the river facing what was once the most beautiful skyline in the world. I looked out my window yesterday and could not believe what I saw, it will never be the same, life as we know it will never be the same, this was an attack on all of us, some of us were closer than others but the effect of this will touch the world. I broke down on Tuesday and cried like I hadn't cried before, but I woke up this morning and said we can not let them win. We must come together as a country; we must come together as human beings and put an end to the threat that these terrorists placed on us. I will get married on Saturday, I will not be going to Tahiti as planned but will figure out how to start my new life with my new wife. God was with us and is giving us the chance to go on, many people unfortunately can't say the same thing. I am grateful and pray for the families of those who lost loved ones. My fiancee who was looking so forward to her wedding day is staying strong, the memories etched in her mind forever. Wallsters we need your prayers for all our friends and family. We lost many Ranger fans this week. Steve443c10 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 021:32:29 EDT STEVE, what a horrible story. I am so sorry for the friends you and your intended lost. I AM happy that you two did decide to go on with the Wedding Saturday. It will lend beauty and happiness to your ugly and sad experience Tuesday. Congratulations. Im sorry that you are not going to Tahiti,,I think it would help to get away...but of course, you two know yourselves and probably are making the decision you can cope with. I KNOW we will rebound from this, we are already pulling ourselves up, dusting ourselves off, shedding our tears and moving on. WIOSA -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 021:46:17 EDT This is an unedited story that a colleague and I wrote today that will appear in my newsletter tomorrow: "Don Simone didn?t see the first airliner strike the World Trade Center. Simone, a partner with Thacher, Proffitt & Wood, had an office in the south tower?s 40th floor, facing New York Harbor. ?I didn?t really hear the first jet,? he said, ?but all of a sudden I could see burning debris raining down past my window.? When word got out that a plane had slammed into the north tower, employees were told to leave. During the evacuation, a loudspeaker announcement reassured everyone that the south tower was secure, so Simone stayed put. He was talking on the telephone when the second hijacked airliner sliced into the offices several floors above. ?It was a big ?boom,? and you felt it,? Simone said. ?It jolted the whole office. The walls started to buckle. I was thrown halfway out of my chair. I thought the whole building was going to topple over right then. I got up and I just ran down the hall to the stairs. Everything was cracking around me.? Though the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center apparently claimed no lives within the CMBS industry, it created plenty of close calls. It also left many witnesses with indelible memories of carnage and destruction. David Lazarus, a senior vice president with GMAC Commercial Mortgage, was riding the PATH train to the World Trade Center to deliver some legal documents. The train was pulling into the station when the first explosion rocked the north tower. The PATH engineer immediately threw the train into reverse and left the station. At J.P. Morgan Chase?s 60 Wall Street office, real estate executives heard a crash and felt the office shake when the north tower was hit. Looking out of the windows, they saw burning papers cascading from above. Some gathered around an office television and after a few minutes they saw footage of the burning building. Within minutes, they could see the United Airlines jet flew by at a dangerously low altitude. The plane disappeared behind another skyscraper and almost instantly rammed the second tower. Once again, the building shook and within a few seconds a tidal wave of dust and debris rolled over the building. One CMBS executive said that panicked workers immediately fled the building, some screaming and crying. ?It was insane,? he said. ?I don?t know how to truly describe what it was like.? One investment banker was staring at the burning north tower when the second airliner ?zoomed right over our building -- it was very fast, very direct.? Before his eyes, the south tower was torn open and set ablaze. ?We evacuated the building and the police directed us all to the water,? one investment banker said. ?We just stood there and watched -- we couldn?t believe what we were seeing.? Another banker turned and started walking up the West Side Highway. ?I?m glad I did that,? he said. ?It meant I didn?t see it when those people started jumping out of the windows.? Witness after witness reported the same dazed impulse to simply walk and get away from the scene as quickly as possible. One attorney walked all the way back to his Midtown apartment. ?I didn?t really know what happened,? he said. ?I was sort of in a daze. I just wanted to get back to my place. I didn?t even think -- I just had to get away.? ... Steve: What a terrible story, I hope you can recover soon enough. Sounds like you work at Merrill or Lehman. I talked to some people at the WFC who saw some gruesome sites from their offices. paulf -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 022:00:28 EDT Thanks for the support. Paul, the stories I have heard the past few days could fill a book, it will take a long time for people to get over the things they saw. I truly don't believe it has hit them yet, I know my fiancee and she is not herself, she is putting on a good front, but I know in her heart she is aching. I can't erase what she saw but can only be there to support her. Paul as i said my office faces the City, this past Monday 2 F-16's pasted by and I heard them coming in it was loud. Ironically, the guy in the office next to me said he thought a plane was going to crash into our building. The next day he was in his office and withnessed the whole thing, saw the first plane couldn't believe it, the whole office gathered in the offices facing the skyline and helplessly watched as the second plane flew by the Statue of Liberty into the second tower. The women in the office were screaming, it was caos. A horrible, horrible situation. Paul, Merrill. Steve443c10 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 022:06:19 EDT Why is this JACKASS Vince McMahon on Thursday smack down? What an ASS. I cannot believe the unmitigated gaul of this man....I'm speechless Sherwood -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 022:24:41 EDT errr, Sherwood, what are you talking about? WIOSA -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 022:25:08 EDT Steve: I just walked out to the Hoboken piers and watched the billowing smoke coming from what appears to be the Amex/Lehman building. What a sight ... So much of the damage of this is going to be pschological. My friend who was on the 29th floor of WTC 1 when the plane hit is a wreck, according to his wife. There was a handicapped person in his office who stayed put with a security officer and they are missing. He is feeling guilty because he didn't save anybody. But at the time he didn't even know what was going on, he was following instructions to evacuate. paulf -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 022:27:21 EDT WIOSA.....I appreciate your objectivity on the retliation issue. I am aware how and why the thought of the (hopefully) imminent storm of justice can seem chaotic and frightening.......I try not to paint too graphic a picture of what I envision as the necessary measures, but I feel the perpetrators and the Arabic revelers of our bloodshed paint it clearly enough. I just pray, with evry fiber of hope and faith within my body and soul, that our country's leadership executes the necessary means THIS TIME and not NEXT TIME. Because, WIOSA, it is you and I and our families that the monsters prey upon, and NEXT TIME, you or I may not be around for the discussion. FerociousMonk -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 022:44:28 EDT WIOSA....In addition, the fact that there are spme fledgling militants among our own people does not distort the obvious fact of where the ROOT of this monster lies. And the Fundamentalist groups all emerge from the same seed of hatred. If it's not Arafat, Hussein, bin Laden, it's another. But there's always another, and then another. Because their predecessors were not made an example, but a martyr. We know who the enemies are, and we always have. However, it has been our country's political policy to try to contain them, instead of eliminate them. Throughout the brief, young existence of the United States, that policy had appeared effective on a relative basis. But throughout history, containment of an enemy only created a more bitter enemy in the future. For an empire, a state, a tribe, or a country to truly defend itself, the vanquishment of the enemy was always necessary. It is necessary now. FerociousMonk -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 022:53:52 EDT WIOSA - I was watching Fox news when they switched over to WWF wrestling LIVE....Vince McMahon starts preaching how today's a special day blah, blah, blah. Every other sporting event has shut down to show respect and couth in a terrible situation...but these guys are wrestling for ratings. I'm sorry to waste Wall space, it just makes me sick. Sherwood -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 023:25:21 EDT Just a scary thought I've been thinking about all day...I would imagine that there are still more of these "cells" of terrorist scum still within this country with a plan, I don't think those 18 or so involved in Tuesday's nightmare are the end of this... and hearing tonight the report at JFK about suspicious people with fake pilot licences and airline employee apparel doesn't make me feel at ease. We will be looking over our shoulders for a very long time from now on, a BIG EFFING SHAME. I really hope our federal agencies can/will be smarter than these scumbags. I really think it is way past due time to close the borders. CrazyCarl --------------------------------------------------------------------
